Don’t Drift Away

Can I tell you something about drifting? It doesn’t happen consciously. It happens unconsciously.

Hi, I’m John Bevere.  I am co-founder of Messenger International, along with my beautiful wife, Lisa.  I am here on God Today because I am so excited about you starting your day out right.  Let me read a scripture to you that I absolutely love. That is Hebrews 2:1, “So we [he is speaking to Christians] must.” Now listen to these words: “we must”.  Not “we should”. Not “it’s a good idea”. “We must listen very carefully.” Not just carefully. “Very carefully to the truth we hear or we may drift away from it.”

That is a riveting statement.  He is telling believers, we must listen very carefully to the word of God, lest we drift away.  Can I tell you something about drifting? It doesn’t happen consciously. It happens unconsciously.  I remember as a boy I loved to fish. I grew up on a lake called White Lake. It is in Michigan, it filters into the big lake, Lake Michigan.  So, I grew up on water and one time I remember, it must have been after school, or maybe summer vacation, I was so excited about fishing. I forgot to anchor my boat.  Here I am fishing away for 30 minutes and all of a sudden I look up and I don’t even recognize the shoreline. I had drifted so far from where I started fishing. I didn’t even know where I was!

That is the way drifting happens.  You don’t realize you are drifting when you are drifting.  That is why the writer of Hebrews uses this word. It happens, but it is unknown to you.  Why? Your eyes are getting dull. Your ears are getting dull. Why? You aren’t feeding your spirit.  See, if I am a person and I try to go without food for 2 or 3 days, I am going to get weaker and weaker.  If some people were to come up and try and take our money – hey! You know what? I better be ready for the fight to protect my wife and myself.  But, if I haven’t eaten for 3 days? I don’t care how weak they are, they are probably going to beat me. That’s what happens to people spiritually.  They are not in the Word. David says, “Thy Word I hid in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

What happens when we sin?  To sin means we have missed the mark.  We have drifted off course. This is why it is so important.  I don’t care if you go to work at 7:00 in the morning. Set your alarm for 30 minutes earlier and feed yourself with the Word of God.  Make it the first thing you do everyday. Nourish your spirit so you will be able to stand against the darts the enemy tries to throw against you.  The things that the world tries to draw you into. Why do we not want to do that? Because we want to have fellowship with God. We want to enjoy His presence.  We don’t want to be pulled into the darkness of the world.

I hope that has helped you.  Remember it is Hebrews 2:1 in the New Living Translation.  Have a great day today.
