I began to pour into His life the best I could.  And before I knew it, I had one of the godliest, passionate, great leaders as my personal, spiritual mentor.

My name is Reed Grafke with “reedgrafke.com”, welcome to God Today.  I would like to talk to you about finding a mentor, or even better, finding a spiritual Papa or mother, whichever.  Most of us would love to have a mentor or a spiritual mom or dad.  But we have no idea how to find such a person.

For me, I began younger in life, serving the ministries of others.  I have discovered that I had a lot of great mentors.  In fact, when I was about 40 years old, somebody said to me one time words that changed my life because they felt like they came from God and not from a man.   They said to me, “Reed, you have had some of the best mentors in the world, but you have never been mentored by the poor.”  I didn’t understand it at the moment, but that was my call to serve the poor and to learn about the world of missions.  That changed my life forever.  And the trajectory of my life.

I had some great mentors as a young guy, I felt it was maybe one of the greatest privileges of my life.  But, there is a certain level of friendship, and oversight, accountability, that I had lacked from people that were just mentors.  One day, I met a man that was right at 50 years old, and I was still in my 30’s. He had a trail of spiritual sons around him.  He had been one of the most prominent pastors and authors in America at one time.  He went through a health crisis that he barely survived and when he came out of that health crisis, the Lord spoke to him and said, “What do you want to do for the rest of your life?”  He said, “I want to invest the rest of my life in spiritual sons and daughters.”

I became one of those spiritual sons.  My wife, who I didn’t know at the time, became one of those spiritual daughters. Many years later, 35 years later for me, we were both widowed and he introduced us together, and the rest is history.  People say, “How do I get somebody to be my spiritual dad?”  Well, there are many secrets I am sure.  But for me, I asked Him, “What can I do for you? How can I serve you?  What do you need?”  And I began to pour into His life the best I could.  And before I knew it, I had one of the godliest, compassionate, great leaders as my personal, spiritual mentor.  Thank you for listening, I am Reed Grafke.
