This is an invitation to you to let go of your expectations of what listening to the voice of God needs to look like.

I was getting ready for work one morning, and I’d just been for my walk and I was walking up the stairs. I was just about to go and take a shower and put my makeup on and get ready for the day. And as I’m walking up the stairs, I heard the Holy Spirit say, “Let’s go and check the mail.” And I was like, “Lord, I don’t have time to check the mail. You know it will take this long to do this and this long to do this.”  And I had my whole list of complaints about why we shouldn’t go check the mail this morning. But I just kept on feeling that nudge from Him. So I said, “Okay.” And I was a little bit irritated to be honest. So I went inside and I got the key and you have to walk around the corner, down the road a little bit to check the mail.

So we’re on the way, and I get to the mailbox and now I’m anticipating, you know, there’s going to be money in the mailbox or some big thing that’s going to be a surprise. And now I’m all excited about what’s going to be in the mailbox. I put the key in and opened the door, and there was nothing, nothing in the mailbox. I was mad. I closed the door, locked the thing, and said, “God, now you got me to check the mail and there’s nothing in there, and now I’m going to be late for work. What was that all about?” And He said something so beautifully kind to me. He said, “Lisa, it’s not about the fact whether there was mail or not, it’s about the fact that you listened to me. I’m training you to hear my voice.” Oh, I was just amazed at the kindness and the goodness of God that He would take that time to train me to hear His voice.

And it wasn’t about whether there’s mail in the mailbox or not, or the journey, or the time, or the anything. It’s about the intimacy between He and I that He was developing, so I can hear His voice in the small things and in the big things all the way through the day.

So my friend, this is an invitation to you to let go of your expectations of what listening to the voice of God needs to look like. Truly, He is all about relationship with you. He wants to know you and you to know Him. So learn to hear His voice clearly so that you and Him can navigate the day together. That is the most important thing to God. So I bless you with open ears and an open spirit, open heart and open mind to hear the voice of God clearly, and to say yes, no matter what it looks like, letting go of the outcome and trusting that it’s Him and you on a journey together. That is the most exquisite way to be together.
