Did you know that you and I were both created for the future? God actually designed us in such a way to move forward, to move into the future. I don’t know about you, but have you ever taken some time to think about the concept of time? We are all fascinated with time travel movies. One of my favorite classic movies is Back To The Future. We just love this concept of going back in time and doing something different.
We as humans are really intrigued by the concept of time. By seconds, minutes, days, hours, and weeks. But have you ever stopped to think about time? Have you ever wondered that even your perception of time is affected? For example, joy affects our perception of time. Many of you have experienced a great day or a great week. Or maybe even a great vacation where you are just having so much fun. You are filled with joy.
And all of a sudden, that day, or that vacation goes by so quickly, you’re just filled with joy. And you are having so much fun. What is that? Is your joy actually affecting your perception of time? We know time is not going faster, but your perception of time is going faster.
Did you know that movement or the lack of movement affects your perception of time? For me, I hate waiting in lines. I have an allergic reaction to lines. If I see a line, I will avoid it at all costs. I hate traffic and I hate waiting in line for something at the store. The only thing I am somewhat okay waiting in line for is at In N Out Burger. I don’t mind waiting in line at In N Out because it is worth it. The joy set before me is just worth it.
But have you noticed that when you’re not moving anywhere, physically not moving, your perception of time slows down? It is like, “This is taking forever.” Even a drive-thru. When you wait for 5 minutes, it feels like 20 minutes. Just a lack of movement affects our perception of time, I actually think that when we are not going somewhere in life, or we feel like we are stuck. Even this past year, 2020, was just an odd year. It felt like the last 8-9 months of 2020 felt almost like multiple years had passed.
We know this. That joy affects our perception of time and movement or lack of movement affects our perception of time. What I want to just encourage you to understand is that God is actually moving you forward. He is moving you from glory to glory. He has no plan to keep you in the same spot for the rest of your life. And just going around the mountain. He actually wants to move you forward.
Let me leave you with this verse. Hebrews 12:1-2. “Therefore, since we are so surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely. And let us run with endurance the race that was set before us. Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith. Who, for the joy was set before Him, endured the cross despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand, at the throne of God.”
To understand this…you and I were designed for the future. Let’s shed everything that holds us back, and let’s embrace the future God has for us.
