I want to encourage you today with some really practical things that you can do to get to know the Holy Spirit. You know,the Holy Spirit, we can’t see Him. I know some people have had open visions. I know I haven’t.
You might have. But not everyone has. Ezekiel had them, John had them, Peter had a vision on the roof, so that’s possible.
But many of us haven’t had those open visions yet. And so, how do you get to know somebody you can’t see?
I love the word of God, and I love using the promises in it to stand on. Matthew 7:7 says, “Ask, and you will receive, seek,and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.” And so when you want to get to know the Holy Spirit, right out of that verse, Matthew 7:7, the first thing you can do is ask. I love asking the Holy Spirit questions.
Jeremiah 33:3 promises, “Call to me, and I will answer you.” And I stand on those two verses, and I will ask the Holy Spirit questions all the time. I ask Him spiritual questions, I ask Him practical questions, and He answers me in all areas of my life.
Now do I get the answer I want to hear? Nope. But you know what? He knows me, He’s for me, He’s not against me. Heis the Spirit of Truth, and He will lead me into all truth. And so asking is one of the things that you can do practically to getto know the Holy Spirit.
The second one is seek Him. Spend time with Him. You know, invite Him into the different areas of your life.
One of my favorite times to spend time with the Holy Spirit is when I’m driving. I even sometimes intentionally will go go for a drive to spend time with Him and talk to Him. Part of it is that you get to be alone, but part of it is, you’re doing something, and you can just listen.
But seek Him. When you seek something you’re looking for them. So seek Him. Try to raise your awareness of His presence in your life by inviting Him into the different areas like washing the dishes, mowing the yard, you know, you’re sitting on the bus, you’re waiting at the bus stop,whatever it is. You’re changing a diaper.
Invite Him in, seek Him, and then knock, and the door will be opened.
And, you know, that one we’re like, what does that look like? You know, ask and seek make sense, but knock? I think we can knock by faith. You ready for this one?
I think faith is a key to unlocking heaven on earth. In Hebrews 11:1 it says faith is being sure of what you hope for and certain of what you do not see. And so when I want to get to know the Holy Spirit, I invite him in situations by faith.
You know, I remember the first time I ever prayed for healing. I didn’t know what I was doing. I had been reading a book about John G Lake, who had the Healing Rooms in Spokane, Washington, and my friend was supposed to lead worship at a funeral that day. I think what pushed me to press in to knock and by faith ask Him, is because you can’t reschedule a funeral. And she had a migraine and she was throwing up. And so, I was like, I’ve been reading this book, and this is either true or it’s not. And so I knocked on the door to see if He would answer. And I prayed for her probably ten times. And you know what? She got healed! She got healed!
I knocked by faith. I was knocking. Seek and you will find Him. And I had to pray ten times. I’ve only seen in the Bible, Jesus usually prays once, and He says, “Be healed.”
I see one place where He prayed twice, but I prayed ten times, but she got healed. And that built my faith. I knocked and I found Him in a way I’d never experienced before.
And I want to pray into that, the knocking that you would step out in faith. And that you would knock and you would invitethe Holy Spirit into situations and circumstances where you don’t know what to do and you need His help. And they don’t necessarily have to be bad ones. It can be a dream you want to go after that He’s put in your heart. And so I pray for boldness, Acts 4 for boldness. If you’ve never read Acts 4, read about their boldness.
I release that over you for you to knock and invite the Holy Spirit to show up by faith so that you can know Him in ways you’ve never known. That day, I met Him as Healer.
And I just pray that you would meet Him. He’s the Great I Am. That you would meet Him in new ways as you knock, and He opens the door to revelation of who He is in your life. Amen.
