I am Eric Gilmour with Sonship International and this is God Today. In the book of Colossians, we see there are many things going on with the people of Colossae. Some are being moved by the flesh, others are being moved by spiritual disciplines, some are being carried off into pride and the worship of angels, and others into other things. All of these things that are going on in the midst of the people, Paul has one solution for them. He begins to exalt Jesus high. He says, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him, all things were created both in the heavens and on the earth. Visible and invisible, whether they are thrones, or dominions, or rulers, or authorities. All things have been created through him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him, all things hold together. He is also the head of the boy, the Church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so He Himself will come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father’s good pleasure for the fullness of deity to dwell inside of Him.
You say, “Eric, what is the point?” Well, one night, my daughter and I laid our backs on the grass and looked up at the stars in the sky. And she is little, and turns to me and says, “Daddy, there are so many stars in the sky.” And I said to her, “Yes, baby There are many stars in the sky.” She says, just like a child, “Where do they go in the day time?” And I turned to her and I said, “Oh baby, they are always there. But because the sun is so high and so bright, you cannot see them.” When I said this to her, I felt the Holy Spirit quicken my heart and show me, if I will lift the Son to the heights, He will extinguish all the other lights. And we begin to see all sorts of other lights when we take the Son of God out of the heights.
What is the message? What are you trying to tell me, Eric? It is this. When Jesus doesn’t occupy first place, there are a lot of unnecessary things that begin to pull at your emotions, pull at your mind, your will, unbelief, doubt, fear. All kinds of things start to come upon you with multiplicity and weary your soul. This is what happens to us. But, if we will take our hearts and lift up Jesus, above all other things, we will find that just as the sun, lifted to the heights extinguishes all the other lights, so lifting up the Son of God will extinguish all these other things. Here is Paul’s remedy for all the problems going on in Colossae: Jesus. And Jesus above all.
I want to encourage you. No matter what is going on in your life right now with maybe your husband, or your wife, or at your work, or with your finances, or just in your body, or in your mind. Whatever it is, if you lift Jesus high, He will take you with Him above these things. And you will be able to live in the blissful enjoyment, and joy, and peace of his person that is far beyond anything that this word can give.
Let me pray for you. Father, thank you for your son, Jesus, who is perfect in every way, matchless and Holy. We worship Him and we thank you for His perfect work on our behalf. We receive it, Lord. We thank you that He stood before you as us so that we could stand before you as Him. We worship you. I pray for every person watching this and I ask you to quicken them by the Spirit, to lift Jesus up, to lift their eyes to the author and finisher of their faith and find right here is joy. Right here is peace. Right here is something so much greater than having everything go your way and everything falls in line. To have Heaven on the Earth is to worship at the feet of Jesus. Amen.
