The Simple Power of Expectation

I want to challenge you in your expectation and in your curiosity for Him today. So often if we’re not careful, we get kind of stagnant in one part of who God is, and we get comfortable there and stop looking for Him in every area of our lives.

Hey everyone, my name is Jasmine Tate, and I’m one of the pastors at Mercy Culture Church. Welcome to God Today. I want to share a quick word with you. I felt stirred to challenge you in your expectations this morning or afternoon or evening, whenever it is that you’re watching this video. The Bible story of Zaccheus is one of the most intriguing stories to me. In Luke 19, there’s this little guy who is known for the way he looked for Jesus. He gets in this tree and he has this sense of expectation and this sense of curiosity about the Man, Jesus.

I love Jesus’ response to Zaccheus’ curiosity. I love Jesus’ response to Zaccheus’ expectation. Jesus basically said to Zaccheus after this whole encounter, “Hey Zaccheus, I’m going to come to your house.” How crazy is that? What if Jesus, the King of glory, said that to you? “I’m going to come to your house because of your expectation. Because of your curiosity, I’m going to show up where you are.” I believe that’s what Jesus wants to do in your life today. He wants to meet you exactly where you are.

But I want to challenge you in your expectation and in your curiosity for Him today. So often if we’re not careful, we get kind of stagnant in one part of who God is, and we get comfortable there and stop looking for Him in every area of our lives. You find Him as a provider and then you’re like, “Cool, God, the provider, all right, that’s what He is. That’s all I know is God.” But there’s so much more to Him. There are so many facets of who God is. He’s a provider, but He’s also a father and a friend. He also is a nurturer. He’s also a comforter. There are so many different facets of who He is.

Today, what would it look like for you to challenge yourself in hunger, asking God to show another facet of Himself to you? I believe there are more facets that He wants to show to you. I think that’s why He showed up at Zaccheus’ house. There were parts of Jesus that Zaccheus had not yet encountered yet. And He knew, “Man, if I can sit down with Zaccheus in his house, there are things about him that I’m going to get to learn about him. But there are so many things that he’s going to learn about Me and My character and My heart towards him that he never knew about.” I think He wants to do that for you today too. Can we pray together?

Lord, we love You. We thank You for every person that’s watching right now. We pray that in the same way that You met Zaccheus, I pray that You would meet them right where they are in their home, in their business office, in their car, while they’re cooking, Lord, we pray that You would meet them right where they are. I pray that You would increase their expectancy, that You would increase their hunger, that You would increase their curiosity about Who You are, and that they would not lose their wonder in any facet of Who You are.

I pray that You would literally blow their mind with new facets of Who You are in their everyday life and that they would be struck with wonder and awe in what seems like the mundane places in their lives, Lord. We love You. And we thank You. We give you this day, in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
