God will never ask you to perform for your identity. God will affirm who you are before you've done anything so that what you do flows out of who you are.

Hi, I’m Tim Specht and I am the youth and outreach pastor at Bethel Austin and this is God Today. I want to talk to you about the power of understanding your identity and who you are. The first thing I want to share with you is a dream that I had, and this dream that I had was right before I made a pretty significant geographical move where I was living in the United States.

I had this dream one night and in this dream, I was in an airport and I had my boarding pass for my flight. I was approaching the gate about to board this flight. In the dream, I realized that I had no personal identification that matched my boarding pass. I wasn’t going to be able to board that flight without my ID or my passport, which I didn’t have. So in the dream panic gripped me. I began to run about the airport, looking for an open door that might lead me to the tarmac so I could run to the plane and get on secretly, or an air vent that I could hop into and crawl through like a secret agent and get to the plane.

As I’m panicking, running around this airport, I wake up out of the dream and I sense God speak to me at that moment. What I heard Him say was, “Tim, if you don’t remember who you are, I can’t take you where you’re meant to go.” It was a powerful dream for me because I think I can often limit myself based on how I view myself. I think this is true for many believers in that sometimes the only person limiting you is you.

Your identity is so powerful. In fact, it’s so powerful that the devil himself ruined his plan in the Scriptures by showing us what he wants to attack most in the life of the believer. And it is the understanding of who you are as a child of God. We see this in the beginning of creation in Eden, in the garden where Eve was tempted by Satan. And he says, “If you eat the fruit, you’ll become like God.” Well, the thing that Eve forgot was that she was already made in God’s image.

What I love next is that we see Jesus in the desert and the devil tries to attempt Jesus in the same way that he tempted Eve. Three times he prefaces a temptation towards Jesus with a question. “If you are the Son of God, do this, do that, do this.” I love Jesus because He didn’t take the bait. He remembered what the Father spoke over him in the river Jordan when John the Baptist dunked Him in and the heavens were opened and Jesus heard his Father speak. He said, “This is my Son in whom I’m well pleased.” Jesus didn’t forget that.

The amazing thing about your identity and about God is that God will never ask you to perform for your identity. God will affirm who you are before you’ve done anything so that what you do flows out of who you are. And that is so key and so important to remember. As I wrap up, I just want to pray for you that you would have a new revelation today of your identity as you understand who you are as a child of God.

Lord Jesus, I thank You for every viewer. I thank You for the power of our identity. Lord, I ask that You would release right now understanding, wisdom, and revelation that each person would understand who they are and Whose they are. And that in understanding that You would launch them into their destiny and into more freedom than they could ever imagine. God bless you. Amen.
